From Sawdust to Sawdust: The History and Meaning of Holy Week Alfombras and Insight into Guatemalan Culture
Insights Lecture Series
Garrett Fenchel, Development Coordinator, Cooperative for Education
People come from around the world to view the spectacular sights of Holy Week in Antigua, Guatemala. The main feature is the Alfombras – up to mile long carpets made of dyed sawdust, sand, pine needles, fruits, flowers and much more that decorate the street sin celebration and in honor of Jesus Christ’s rising from the dead (and possibly a few other gods as well).
Garrett Fenchel will discuss the history and meaning behind these spectacular creations, as well as how Mayan and Christian traditions meld in Guatemala and where else in the world similar carpets appear. He will also dive into the importance of Guatemalan culture, especially to the Midwest and particularly the city of Cincinnati. Garrett will share his personal experiences from his many travels and the knowledge he has gained from his work experience as part of Cooperative for Education, an organization dedicated to serving the communities of rural Guatemala.
In collaboration with Price Hill Will and Cooperative for Education.
