The West End: a Cross-Generational Story
In conjunction with the Finding Kenyon Barr exhibit, Cincinnati Museum Center will join forces with West End residents and historians for an evening of history and storytelling. Created by historian Anne Delano Steinert and featuring photos from the Cincinnati History Library and Archives at Cincinnati Museum Center, Finding Kenyon Barr examines the events of the 1950s West End displacement. As city planners pushed for urban renewal, the West End was forced to change from a residential neighborhood to a business center. This shift left many of the neighborhood’s 25,000 residents, most of whom were African-American, immediately displaced.
Despite the loss of homes, businesses and social structures, the West End community endeavored to preserve its culture and history. The West End: a Cross-Generational Story will use historical photographs to gain the perspective of the displaced as they endeavored to preserve their legacy and to honor the strength they found in rebuilding.
Bring your own stories of the West End to share. After a brief introduction from Christine Engels, our Archives Manager in the Geier Research and Collection Manuscripts Department, community members Vonnie Tawwab and Fannie Shaw will describe the neighborhood before Interstate 75 and Queensgate, while Seven Hills’s Executive Director, Alexis Kidd, will speak about more recent events happening in the neighborhood.
The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra will provide a special performance from 6:30 to 7 p.m. as guests arrive. Lecture starts at 7 p.m.
Finding Kenyon Barr is on display at Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses - Findlay Street Center from February 1 through March 15.
