2008 SEASONAL POSITION 

HORTICULTURAL TECHNICIAN

Assists horticulturist with all maintenance and planting tasks including: Bed preparation, mulching, weeding, pruning, planting of various plant material and plant removal; deadheading, trash pick up in beds, raking up debris, fertilizing and other chemical applications, and watering. Will be exposed to weather and various horticultural chemicals. Bending, stretching, heavy lifting, and some strenuous labor may be required.  Work performed on City’s public Greenspace areas on community gateways, parkways, traffic islands, downtown Cincinnati, community business districts, and major arteries through the city.

May work under close supervision assisting the horticulturist or alone under general or specific instruction. May work with volunteers and answer general gardening questions from the public.

Operates mechanized equipment and hand tools with or without supervision. Some knowledge of plants, gardening practices and techniques is required. Specific skills or the operation of certain pieces of equipment may be learned on the job.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED
• College-level coursework in horticulture (or related field) and/or horticultural work experience preferred
• Provide own transportation to and from work
• Must be a Hamilton County resident
• Must provide current Police records check
• Requires valid Ohio driver’s license
• Drug screen required

PAY/HOURS:

$10 per hour; flexible starting time March or April through fall, 2008

40 hours per week, an occasional evening or Saturday morning may be required
