• HVAC Technician - Apprentice

    Job Description

    Responsible for providing installation, preventative maintenance and repair of industrial and commercial HVAC systems (heating, air conditioning and ventilation) in concourses, terminals and facilities. Other duties include snow removal and operating heavy equipment.

    This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the department.
    • Performs preventative maintenance on heating, ventilation and air conditioning units.
    • Performs corrective maintenance on pumps, bearings, valves and other HVAC related pieces of equipment.
    • Monitors equipment and status of chillers and air handlers.
    • Prepares and maintains maintenance records and reports. Inventory equipment related to heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
    • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

    High School Diploma or GED and up to one year of technical training in a related field; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
    Acceptance of apprenticeship position is a permanent commitment through completion of the program. Must successfully complete KCAB HVAC Maintenance Training Program with at least On Target evaluation ratings before eligible to move on to HVAC Maintenance Technician position.

    • Universal Refrigeration EPA 608 Certification
    • Valid Operator’s License
    • Security Identification Display Area Clearance (SIDA)

    • Safe operation of vehicles, lifts and ladders;
    • Pumps, pressure relief valves to adjust and/or rebuild;
    • Soldering of metals in very tight spaces and around mixed metal types.

    • Demonstrated skill in interpreting wiring diagrams in/on units;
    • Demonstrated skill in safely operating a hand drill, and hammer drill;
    • Demonstrated skill in safely lifting/pulling loads to work areas;
    • Demonstrated skill in proper loading/unloading vehicles;
    • Clearly and effectively communicating, both orally and in writing;
    • Use of a variety of computer-based technologies including word processing, and spreadsheets;
    • Establishing and maintaining effective, fair, cooperative, collaborative and respectful relationships with internal and external colleagues, peers, work teams and workgroups.

    Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
    Very Heavy Work: exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
